The manual I'm learning from does say that single quotes are "STRONG" and
double quotes are "WEAK" but does not explain much about what the difference
is.

In a nutshell: Double quotes still allow variables (like your $1 $2, etc) inside the string. Single quotes would actually print the characters $ and 1, rather than substitute the value of the variable.


I appreciate the added code Scott. Can I use a different status to know
which part of the script failed? Will I be able to tell in CL (same message
different code?)

You can use any code from 0 - 255. By convention, 0 means "success" and any non-zero value means "fail". Feel free to use different non-zero values to denote different errors.
