Jerry,

I agree that that's probably the biggest single impediment to mass acceptance of this machine. At this point in time an integrated, native to RPG (and the other languages), seamless browser interface would be required. An X-Windows type of interface wouldn't cut it.

Screen scrapers, 3rd party add-ons, will not do the trick. Only an officially sanctioned full solution from IBM will change the public's perception that this is an "old" machine. It's old because it LOOKS old, not because it is old.

I am currently fighting to keep an i in a client. They have been on the IBM midrange line for about 20 years! Of course they have upgraded numerous times. It has served them well. The younger (and even not so young!) generation that has been coming into the business for the past 5 years place a high value on a GUI. It's not the only factor, but it's not a vanity thing anymore.

They do NOT want to pay extra for something that should easily be part of the OS at this point in time. I don't blame them. In order for me to deliver a GUI solution, they would to pay more in software fees, maintenance fees, development and support costs. This is an unacceptable situation - I should not have to fight this fight.

Another case was a potential client where the initial and subsequent meetings went well. It was a replacement to their existing PC based system, which has a nice GUI.

The bottom line was that the difference in cost do develop it using green screen vs. a decent GUI front end pushed the price too high to be competitive.
