As you've already pointed out, you can't put a BLOB field in a MODS/array to be returned from RPG. You could return a cursor, of course, but that leads you right back to needing a temporary file...

However, I find myself wondering if maybe a UDTF would work? With a UDTF, you declare the data types of the fields in SQL, it doesn't infer them from the RPG side of things -- so maybe that'd work? I haven't tried it, but it's a thought...

I would definitely, without any doubt, stay away from a UNC path or FTP path unless this is for internal company use only. An http path might be a good alternative, though.
