I have used the merge when upgrading to a new software version from a vendor to reapply custom mode to the vendor code. In my opinion, it works so well, you "almost" don't have to test the changes. On the rare occasion when the mod from the old code wants to overlay too much of the new version, I just take a print screen and manually review those lines later.
I keep forgetting about the PDM options. I use the MRGSRC command directly.

Honestly, I find all other merge tools to be inadequate - it's worth a look, IMO. And thanks to Mark Waterbury, who had a lot of influence on the design.
