IIRC F is not the only valid indicator of positive values in a zoned field - it is really a single bit that says what the sign is - I don't remember which it is

Maybe you're thinking about packed values...

The zone value for the low-order byte of signed numeric positive values is always F.
The zone value for the low-order byte of signed numeric negative values is always D.
