Without starting a Holy War here, Chanukah predates Christmas, it starts
on the 25th of Kislev, which is a part of the Hebrew calendar, the reason
that Chanukah will fall around the 25th of December quite often is the
date changes on the gregorian calendar.

Chanukah is traditionally called the Festival of Lights, it is a
celebration of the rededication of the Temple.

The gift giving was traditionally a gold coin each day of Chanukah, which
has certainly been commercialized since then.
