No, that's not my understanding... In IBM I, a program object links to
a flavor of MI, which is part of TIMI. From time to time, when IBM
issues new servers built on new hardware, or sometimes on OS release
updates, all of your programs will have to be "retranslated" to make use
of new features or support within TIMI and/or SLIC. This "first touch"
conversion happens automatically, and really consists of no more than a
linking of the program template into the new runtime. Every program
since V5R1 contains metadata that can be used for retranslation.

The exception to this rule is PASE. This is a runtime environment that
allows AIX generated program objects to execute directly on the CPU.
PASE does not make use of TIMI, meaning that your executable code is
intimately tied to the hardware it runs on.

Think of this like a JVM. Java compiles to intermediate code, which
then is translated to executable code by the runtime. Same idea, just

on a larger scale....

Did you see this on IBM's site?

Yes - that's where I got the paragraph that confused me! From what I've
just been told, the native pSeries instructions are also attached to the
*PGM object and that they are what are actually executed, not something
intepreting the MI instructions.
