I was told the RPG could likely replace
Easytrieve, but everytime I look at RPG, my stomach starts to burble.

It's been some years since I wrote and maintained COBOL, but the /free-format version of ILE RPG comes pretty close to the look and feel of COBOL's Procedure Division.

I used to train programmers, too. Those with COBOL experience took to RPG II (this was awhile ago) than the RPGers did to COBOL. No doubt because RPG does many of the mundane tasks via the cycle that one has to program directly in COBOL, like opening and closing files. But, hey, you can do you own opens and closes, if you want, in ILE RPG.
