Well, I was told (forget who now; had the DVD for months) that I could. My BP ordered the "IBM System i Access Family Refresh - Version 6 Release 1". I think it's the "Refresh" that makes the difference. Who knows though? .-) I did a Save 21 plus it's a backup system. I guess, if it fubars, I can look forward to a new experience - complete system reload. Maybe Bolhuis, Massiello, or someone more experienced will chime in before I turn the 520 into a boat anchor.
As regards the Client side, I upgraded my PC to 6.1 yesterday. Haven't noticed anything spectacular yet in System i Navigator except (probably just my imagination) it seems to take even longer to load (if you can believe that!). I figured the new features for the client needed the corresponding code on the server. I remember, when I first started SINav that it said something along the lines of "Searching for features supported..."
Anyway, the upgrade to IBM i 6.1 isn't in the cards until sometime after January.

You can upgrade from Client Access 5.4 to System I Access 6.0 _on the i5
itself_ before upgrading the OS to 6.1?
If so, I did not know that. How is that done?
I've been upgrading the PCs to System I Access 6.1 here, but doing it
directly at the PCs . . .
