Do you need the field to change on the same execution of the screen, or do you need certain users to see the field as update and others as view only?

We have some applications where we want to protect different subsets of fields for different users. Our programmers have figured out that if you copy the display file DDS and change the field attributes, both versions of the screen will work with the same program. Even though the program thinks the field is update, the screen attributes will protect the field(s) that a particular user is not to touch.

Check box field on a green screen:

Is it possible to protect a check box field in DDS? I have a yes/no
field I would like to display as a check box and not as Y/N. When the
field is in update mode it works just fine, but I have some situations
where I want the field to be viewable but not changeable.
