To get the usage of a given field in a given file...

select count(*) from myfile where myfield <> ' '

assuming blanks means "no information"

to get usage for all fields of a given file

select
sum(case fld1 when ' ' then 0 else 1 end) as Fld1Use,
sum(case fld2 when 0 then 0 else 1 end) as Fld2Use,
<....>
from myfile

You could, using either the SQL descriptor area (SQLDA) or certain IBM
API's, write a program that determines at run-time the field names and
data types for a given file. Then builds an SQL statement as shown
above to return the information you want.

But why? What possible use is this going to be?

I am trying to get the "usage" count on all fields in any file on the system.
Have looked in QSYS at some of the system files -- but not seeing anything
I can use.

Here is what I need: Say a file has 10 fields per record....and contains a
1000 records. I need the count of each of the 10 fields that have
"infomation" in them. Not looking for the record count.

Can write a program or use query tools to get this -- simply looking for an
easier way.

Thanks!
