All,

I am assigned a project to attempt to improve the running time for the nightly process. So here is
the situation: One program reviews over 26,000 records nightly by calling a pricing program
that calls over 20 different RPG programs to determine a price for the customer. And this
pricing program is called again to provide the customer with an alternate price should they choose
to avoid the price increase. This program requires several hours each night to review these records.

Making sure that all of the relevant files and access paths are shared
will likely help, but the OS probably does a lot of that already.

Perhaps you can adjust the programs to not SETON LR when they
complete, so the repeated overhead of program start and program end is
removed. When doing this, care should be taken to make sure that each
program properly initializes itself when called.

Also, by reviewing the overall design, you may be able to eliminate
unnecessary and/or duplicative calls, reads and calculations. For
instance, perhaps the first run can calculate both prices at the same
time.

Take care.
