i have a NEP that i use to monitor QSYSOPR message queue that sends a text
message using MMAIL. it's available for download on my web site

THANK YOU to everyone who has replied to my question. I had not thought
about using the texting function for a cell phone. Thank you David
Wright for the list of all the cell phone carrier addresses for text
messaging. I was able to send my phone a detailed message of what the
failure is, so I can get onto the system and fix it. IBM needs to
expand their messaging to include a command like SNDPHNMSG or maybe Al
Barsa's group at TAATOOLS can create this command for a more ease of use
compared to the SNDST command.
Anyway - thank you all again for the help on this.

Yeah, thing is with this is that the email is one way...
Not really, at least for Verizon the "email" comes in as an SMS message
from the sender's email address. So a reply SMS would go back to the
sender. With some simple mail-server creativity you could easily respond
to messages and take automatic actions. For example, respond to an SMS
about a CPF message in QSYSOPR w/the reply to be entered for the CPF
message. There's a little plumbing to be done there, but not much.
