guessing about file format here:
you did say it was in separate fields..

XCC X2 century 20
XYY X2 year 08
XMM X2 month 10
XDD X2 day 20

(sort format)
XCC||XYY||XMM||XDD gives you 20081020
or as you stated
XDD||XMM||XCC||XYY gives you 10202008

this can be used in select, order by, and Group
in SQL
