Very nice...that's what we need in the System i market. New sales and
competitive replacements.

Here's a real story of a new customer:

A friend from church owns a small construction company that is starting to
grow quickly. He asked me for some input - software that runs on a Windows
server versus software for some other platform.

I told him to quit fooling around and go with the System i solution from
(Pete knows who). Most ISV's ought to stick to their software and let
somebody else configure the hardware. Unfortunately, IBM will not permit
services to be a "value add". The consulting firms that sell systems always
have to be in bed one way or another with a software company. I'm still
waiting for Mark Shearer to pay up on our wager. But I digress.

At any rate, my friend bought the System i solution, and after I fixed the
hardware issues and gave him some of the utilities I have written over the
years, he's a happy camper. Plus, he hasn't had to hire any "staff".

Upgrades are great, but does anyone have any information about new
installs or competitive replacements? When we see an iSeries replaced,
that's a new (read lifeblood) sale for some other company. Upgrades
make IBM money, and make BPs money, and that's all good. But I don't
know how much upgrades really help the long term viability of the
platform.

You know I always hear about the negative, which is something that I don't
like. Now, I have done a few dozen of these this year, and never wrote
something up. So, I thought it was time. Now I am not proposing that we
all do this on every new or upgraded machine, but it's interesting how we
are so quick to point out the negative of someone getting off the box, why
is it that we don't talk about people staying on their machines.

A customer of mine down on Long Island who is so satisfied the way that
their AS/400 has been running the business has decided to upgrade to a new
i5 520. They understand the cost of ownership, they have lived through
the
machine providing them constant up-time, in the 5 years they never had to
do
a CTL-ATL-DEL sequence to fix a problem. They are a growing business that
has relied on their iSeries to grow with them and support their business.
As additional workload was put on, the machine was able to handle it.
Now,
as we move to a newer faster, less expensive machine, we expect that this
machine will last them another 5 years.
