We experienced the same thing but on a smaller scale. The battery WAS weak but could have easily handled the "flicker". Personally, I think there should be an option on a "battery weak" condition that you can determine the delay before powerdown. Something like the QUPSDLYTIM but specifically for "Weak Battery" conditions.
