I don't see any way to tell if a stream file is a regular file, a link, or some sort of device file. Can anyone recommend a good method to distinguish between the stream file types?

You should be able to look at the mode parameter to determine the file type.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/iseries/v5r1/ic2924/index.htm?info/apis/stat.htm

That will tell you if the file is a block special file, character special file, directory, fifo, regular, symlink, socket, or native object.

Thanks David. I wondered about that, but the description of the mode refers to the chmod() documentation, which (understandably) only lists the symbols related to setting permissions. I guess I have to look at stat.h to find out more details.
