Rob,

I do this all the time, and I do what's called Burn the image.
Because the .BIN file is actually a CD-ROM image. I assume that you are at
V5R4 and below, because at 6.1 the PTFs are DVD images (huge in size, but
less of them).

I think I had to set my options for RAW mode and write entire image
(or something like that vs write track at a time).

I had already been to London to download my PTFs to a PC.

I altered the .BIN files to .ISO. I am using Sonic's RecordNow version 6
which came as standard with my Thinkpad. If I try to copy the ISO file, it
writes the data but at the end says "This disc is incompatible with the
source disc" The advanced data is
"Sense: 02 ASC: 04 ASCQ: 08 (Command 2A)
Px. dll: 1.6.14.507"

Yet I managed this the other day without any problem on the same Thinkpad
with the same software, the same make of CD-R, etc.

If I try to create a data file, rather than copy it, it just creates
another
ISO file.

Has anyone any idea what I am doing wrong?

I am working a short week (COMMON) and hope that someone else adds it to
the wiki.

I've never put downloaded ptf's to a physical CD. I've always downloaded
them directly to the i and then used "virtual CD" on the i to install
them. If your bandwidth at the site is unacceptable, what about
downloading them on a London based i and saving them to tape? Or
downloading them on a London based PC and then FTPing the binaries up at
the remote after lugging the pc over there and putting it on the lan?

Then

use virtual CD.

This is a very full explanation and it must have taken some time to type
it. I much appreciate it. It should go up on a wiki or somewhere where

is easily found by those who, like me, need it.

I decided to go up to London yesterday evening to download the PTFs

again,

but I am now having a PC problem - it copies the files to CD and just as
it
finishes, decides that the CD is the wrong type. I will post the problem
on
PC tech.

MF* PTFs: Licensed Internal Code (LIC) fixes. Traditionally the realm

of

IBM hardware more than software. You see these in DSPPTF 5722999.

Anyone

with a valid hardware maintenance contract can order these. (Although

I

do not think that IBM unbundles hardware and software maintenance
anymore.) These ptf's used to almost always require an IPL to apply.
Although more and more are being applied without requiring an IPL as

newer

releases of the os come out. If you are doing an abnormal IPL. (Like

you

ran an ENDJOBABN or any of a number of other functions) then these will
still apply at the next IPL.
SI* PTFs: fixes for other LPPs (Licensed Program Products) like os,
iSeries access, etc. You see this in DSPPTF 5722SS1 or most of the

rest

of your software resources. These normally require a valid software
maintenance contract to order. A vast majority of these can be applied
without an IPL. There may be special actions required, like kick all
users out of a certain function. If you are doing an abnormal IPL.

(Like

you ran an ENDJOBABN or any of a number of other functions) then these
will NOT apply at the next IPL. You should perform two IPLs. The

first

will reset the IPL from abnormal to normal. The second will apply the
PTFs.

CUME: A cumulative distribution of PTF's. Not all PTFs make it on a
cume. Generally if IBM feels that is HIPER it will make it on a cume.
Some examples of what may not make it include a ptf that only a small
selection of customers ever needed. IBM may be concerned that it

wasn't

distributed to enough customers and there may be a negative side effect
that was unnoticed. Typically cumes only come out once a quarter or

so.

Unless IBM ships a really nasty defective PTF on a cume then they may
announce a new cume right away.
You can see what cume you are running with WRKPTFGRP or DSPPTF 5722999

or

5761999 at V6. The highest TL* should be indicative of the cume. A
sample cume might be 08190. Which means it was generated on the 190th

day

of 2008.
You can see what the latest cume is by

and drilling down for SF98### where ### is replaced by the appropriate
version, release and modification level. For example SF98530. Once

you

read that you end up ordering SF99### (notice I replaced the 8 with a

9?).

Group PTF's: Groups of related PTF's. For instance there may be PTF's
for LIC, os and 5722TC1 (TCP/IP) itself all related to ensuring that
TCP/IP works fine. These will all be in a group for TCP/IP. Most

people

do not have a need for all of these groups. For example, it's a rare

shop

indeed that will be running all flavors of Websphere at the same time.
However there are some groups that all shops should strive to stay
somewhat current in, like Hiper. You can see what groups you have
currently installed on your system with WRKPTFGRP. Pay close attention

to

the "level". You can see what groups are available at IBM with:

Groups may come as often as once a week. The hiper group often does.

Service Packs: These apply only to iSeries Access. You can download

install them directly on each PC, or you can install them on the i and
modify the Service properties in iSeries Access to occasionally check

i, in a certain directory, and it will download whatever SP you loaded

on

the i. Another common technique is to put them on a network server out
there and download from that. You can see these on your system with
DSPPTF 5722XW1.

Recommended PTFs: These are PTF groups, and some individual PTF's that
may not be on a CUME or group.

I don't know whether this question was directed at me, but, if so,
certainly
not, and I am not sure why you would have thought that I was. Please

be

patient with me - there are many aspects of the AS/400 iSeries that I
understand pretty well, but not everything - I work on a need to know
basis. Certainly on OS/400 and PTF installation I am woefully ignorant
because I haven't done it for so long. So what you, and the others who
are
totally familiar with these tasks, take for granted is often totally
foreign
to me and I don't always know what you are talking about. For

instance,

I

have no idea what MF* or SI* ptfs are. I was not sure that I

understood

"applicable groups" although I did interpret this correclty.

What astonishes me is that you and the others are willing to spend your
time
being so helpful. I know that with your help and my perseverance I

will

get
there. I really appreciate it.

Order the cume, and any applicable groups. The hiper group and db

group

will automatically included in your cume. Granted if your cume is

more

than a week or two old getting a newer hiper group is recommended.

Many thanks to everyone for their help.

I have checked the PTFs and can find nothing obviously worng, nothing

that

needs applying, done countless IPLs, etc.

I feel that since V5R3 is a mature release and the problems that I

have

seem
so basic, that it must be something to do with my installation, so I

am

going to reinstall from scratch, download the PTFs again, etc.

Because

I

have other things to do, this will take me a little while. Perhaps
unnecessary but it may save me time in the long run. I am going to

use

a

different source media for OS/400.

To ensure that I apply the correct PTFs, do I just need the cume pack

or

should I also download the PTFs for individual products? I did the

whole

lot last time. I did not use the PTF cds.

Since you have PTF issues that is really the place to start -

everything

else is slowing you down from fixing the PTF's. Once they are right

you

can

try some of the other suggestions if you still need to.

Apologies if you answered some of this already:

If you do a DSPPTF, do you have products with individual PTF's that

show

as

applied/installed, action required or loaded ?

If you have any with action required you may be able to get away

with

IPL's

again - if you have already done this it would be worth a crack.

Otherwise is you have PTF's showing as loaded you may have loaded

and

not

applied the PTF's in which case you need to run the APYPTF command

and

the

IPL to apply them.

What process did you use to load and apply the cume package ? And

it

is

definitely a cume package, not just PTF CD's right ?
