OK so the 3581 is an LTO1 right? These are SCSI HVD interfaced. Be sure you have Terminated the other port on the drive with the Terminator. It looks VERY CLOSE to the Wrap Connector. IBM later labeled the Wrap Connector in large letters.

If the 3581 is LT02 then it can be either HVD (2749) or LVD. The drive end looks the same but the connector to the system is about 1/2 the size. HVD and LVD are NOT COMPATIBLE. If it's a LTO3 or LTO4 then its LVD and you are attaching it to a the wrong card.
