Recently I came across an 820 2395 with 1521 - not very powerful but
adequate for my needs. However it had 12 X 35Gb drives and it was this disk
capacity that attracted me. It also had other features such as 2749 PCI
Ultra Mag Media Ctlr, 2791 Integrated xSeries Server and had a license for
V5R3 for OS/400 and V5R2 for iSeries Access. I purchased it as scrap so no
backup from a dealer but at about 300 US dollars, I couldn't expect too
much. There was a risk that nothing worked - the 12 drives had been removed
to reduce weight when it was moved and put back in the wrong slots, so there
was no opportunity to test it. This meant that OS/400 needed re-installing,
etc. and I had to get a new electronic key for the control panel (which
meant buying a redundant control panel), as well as a license key for OS/400
and a System Unique Identifier since the load source disk had been changed.
Finding the SUID was quite a challenge since none of my contacts either in
or out of IBM had any idea what this was, but evenutally I got it. I also
purchased 4Gb of memory and an internal tape drive adequate for the software
install for 40 US dollars. I will need to purchase an external tape drive in
due course. I have now installed OS/400 V5R3 and everything works,
including all 12 disks with Raid. I can ping it.

Now I am stuck and need help please. I knew that the original HTTP server
that was part of the base OS/400 had gone and that it was now Apache but I
cannot find how get this running. Do I need to install 5722DG1 - IBM HTTP
Server? SInce this demands a software agreement if you try and install it, I
assume that this is a chargeable item, unlike the original HTTP server. If
it is chargeable, is this the only way to get a web server going? If it is
the only way, I will have to find a price but no one is open today.

I have a vague memory that iSeries for Access is backward compatible,
although I may have misunderstood this. Can I install iSeries for Access
V5R3 and use my license key for V5R2 or must I install iSeries for Access
V5R2 (which I don't have) and if so will it work with OS/400 V5R3?

I only completed the OS/400 install and set up this morning and I haven't
yet tried to find a copy of the PTF's. I don't want to set up a chargeable
software agreement with IBM. Any ideas how I might get hold of a copy of
the PTFs in the UK?

Lastly, I don't use a Windows or Linux Server at all. My other AS/400s do
all I require. Is the 2791 Integrated xSeries Server something that I
should ignore - I haven't configured it yet - or might it have a use?

You may think that I should have ignored the temptation to purchase it and
gone to a dealer and purchased a box with support. I imagine that it would
have been more expensive and anyway I am obviously a masochist.

Many thanks
