Yep, this is a great low-tech way to do it.
We've used this technique with iSeries FTP for years.
quote rcmd <some iseries command>
You can even send back escape messages from the iSeries to indicate
success if you can scrape the FTP results.

You could use FTP to send the data, and the RCMD subcommand to invoke
a program in the iSeries. Would one need to be an Administrator on
your PCs to use FTP?
