My guess here would be that the field is actually specified when you're
doing the update from RPG or DFU. You (the user) may not be entering a
value into the field, but the field is still in the buffer passed to the
system to insert the row, and it probably has its default values
(default from RPG point of view, not from SQL point of view). However,
when you do an insert from SQL and omit the field on the field list then
SQL will use the DEFAULT value for the column, and based on what you're
seeing the default is probably getdate()
