I think that is the essence of my question. Can I?

I'll go ahead and do it. I just want to make sure.

Hi Pete

You can install 545 on a 520 can't you ? That way if/when you have to
migrate you may have the appropriate LIC already on the source machine.

Or have I misunderstood ?

Subject: Licensed Machine Code levels

I have another i5/OS upgrade to do and unlike the last time where I didn't get a Licensed Machine Code base CD (I_BASE_01), this time I got two. One is RS 540-F the other is RS 545-C. I am guessing that the 545 is for a 515/525 machine type but I am not sure. I am installing the V5R3M0 to V5R4M0 upgrade on a machine type 9405 - 520 (Processor Feat 7152).

I think I should be using the RS 540-F CD on this upgrade. Yes?

You can use either the 540 or the 545. The 545 LIC will give you things like RAID5 with Hot Spare. 545 is required for the Power6 HW, so if you plan on going there sometime soon, I would use the 545 LIC.
