That was it, Rob. I had actual numeric data, such as 230, to be uploaded
as cost center "230". Data transfer would not convert the numeric to
char until I ran the function =text(a1,"000") over it as you describe,
then copy and paste values.

After that I was able to run data transfer and have it create the FDF.

Then I added an excel formula
=text(a1,"00000")
Which created another column as
00123
45678
000123
00001
Which I then copied and pasted special as Values.
That uploaded just fine.
