Very good point. I do suggest looking at the cost of hardware maintenance
versus a new machine. Now, there's a certain crowd that does their own
maintenance but I'd not suggest that for 90+% of businesses out there.

The keywords to search for are: "Declaration of plan to discontinue
lease, rental, and maintenance services for selected machines"

I think IBM is tiring of the plan that Lukas spoke of. They are starting
to announce plans to drop several machines. One batch got dropped in
2004. Another batch is planned for 2008.
Normally when IBM drops maintenance you can still get them to work on it.
However it's time and materials and best effort. If you're going to do
that it might behoove you to buy a few backup machines from ebay, and keep
them running to avoid "stiction", and have them around for parts. When
needed, call IBM to scavenge from them. You may find that the additional
power consumption is cheaper than monthly maintenance (on a 436, probably
not on a F97).
