That's less than my laptop has. 3GB of RAM is *nothing* these days.
Start out with 8GB or so. Minimum. V5R4 with all of it's
administrative services running will usually need around 4GB to run
halfway fast. More is always better.

It all depends on what you exactly want to do, how many users, what
kind of workload you're going to run, etc.

Another factor is that in the very small configurations you see in the
515 area, 4 disks in a RAID5 might be faster than 4 disks mirrored -
i've tested this in practice. However, i can't vouch for what happens
with 8 disks.
