We just had a situation where the service agent did NOT call IBM when we
lost a disk drive yet it had called IBM a few months ago when there was
a memory problem.

Why?

The HMC called IBM about the memory problem and was properly configured.

The LPAR did NOT call IBM about the DASD because it was NOT properly
configured.

Morale of the story? Both HMC and @ LPAR must be configured for optimum
results.
