The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

Only changes to the record layout should cause new file/record level
generation. Changing column headings and or text does not. Other
attributes such as allow null will also change the record level. Best
way is to compile the file to a test library. Verify it has the same
level id as the primary file. ( I like to compile with out changing the
source first to make sure the system does not create a new level id do
to upgrades that have happened over the years, especially on older
objects. )
Then I make my changes and verify that the level id did not change.

Subject: Level check failures: how much change to a file?
It's kind of embarrassing to have to ask this, after over a decade
grinding out AS/400 code, but:
How much of a change to a file can you make, before it fails a level
check?
Can you change field text and/or column headings without killing it?
I'd kind of like to know before I start.
