installing patches from NFS

Trying to install CUM PTFs for V5F3 on my -170, I put
all the .bin's on a NFS mount, have read/write permissions.
I then added them to an image catalog, also on NFS.
But the image catalog failed to verify and we couldn't install.

ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(PTFCATALOG)
FROMFILE('/home/gelbardn/sys/as400/ptf/file.n') TOFILE(*FROMFILE)

(This loads the bins into the catalog in place instead of copying them
into a new location).

It turns out we had to copy the .bins to the local drives,
then the image catalog verified.

I suspect that's why 5733SC1 SSH didn't install - the package
was residing on NFS.

Should loading image catalogs & ptfs from NFS work and if not, why?
