I wouldn't want to reorder them either!

Generally I keep all the image catalogs on our DEV LPAR, except when I'm
using them. To get them to other LPARs or systems I either use
ADDIMGCLGE IMGCLG(CUMULATIVE)
FROMFILE('/QFileSvr.400/DEVLPAR/imgclg/cume/C8057540_1.bin') or FTP
and MGET *

If you really want the image catalog directory on a backup it's easily
undone with CHGATR OBJ('/imgclg') ATR(*ALWSAV) VALUE(*YES)

That is an option. However, I've done unload's/reloads that doing so
would have vexed me terribly. For example, I've downloaded all the V6R1
images, cumes, groups, etc into image catalogs. On to a V5R4M5 machine.
I did an unload/reload from my 270 to a different box. After doing some
basic performance monitoring on this new box I will then upgrade to V6R1
and repeat the performance test. If, after the unload/reload, I
discovered that I had to reorder all the image catalogs to do the
upgrade to V6R1 I would not be a happy camper.

Exactly. I usually put image catalogs in a directory called /imgclg.
Instead of omitting that directory from saves I just use the command
CHGATR OBJ('/imgclg') ATR(*ALWSAV) VALUE(*NO)

No, you place the image cat where ever you wish. It doesn't mean you
couldn't, but most people just place it off the root, like /V5R4UPG is
what I always do.

Would that be the same place that am image catalog for the V5R3 to V5R4
upgrade would have been located? I could see that taking a lot of space
and slowing down a backup.

That is the default directory for where you download PTFs using the
SNDPTFORD command with the delivery format *IMAGE. The full directory
is /QIBM/UserData/OS/Service/ECS Perhaps someone downloaded a
cumulative package at one point and the Save took longer, so they
removed backing up that directory.

Does anyone know what this directory is used for or any reason why it
should not be backed up with the rest of the IFS? For some reason this
directory is being omitted from our nightly SAV of the IFS and no one
here remembers why that was ever added.
