I demonstrated how easy it is (at least with recursive descent parsing)
to recognize the context of an "=" over two decades ago, when I took
compiler construction at the university (a graduation requirement for
all CS majors), and the assignment was to write the compiler for a
degenerate subset of Modula-2.

Wow.. Modula-2... that brings back wonderful memories of college. I think
I still have my program source printout for our assignment teaching us
recursion by providing the user _n_ solutions the Golf Tee Wooden Triangle
game by starting with any single space open.

Ahhh... the memories... computer labs.. pizza... frat parties..
