But if the 5250 data stream had been developed to something equivalent to even the most basic form of the XWindows data stream, terminals would still be a very popular alternative.

And as to "built like battleships," our old 3487 ran beautifully, only needing to be repaired once, until the display module finally wore out (I think we probably sold the still-functioning logic module). Our current 3489, 3477, and Yestation probably average about the same age, and they're all fine (and the 3489 and Yestation can be hooked to different monitors if their current ones fail). And while the cheap generic LCD I was using at home has been getting flaky for months, the ViewSonic LCDs at work are showing every sign that they'll outlast the boxes they're hooked to (which is why I just bought one to replace the cheap generic).
