I may be way off base here. But when you say it's taking 50% of the CPU do you by chance have a
multi-core i5?

If so, and the PHP workload is basically single threaded, wouldn't that explain why you're only seeing
50% CPU usage? The PASE job is taking all of the single CPU it can use.

I didn't say it wasn't using CPU - it is the fact that it is slow
_while_ there is still a bunch of free CPU available that interested me.

The specific app that I'm working with happens to be PHP. There is
zero I/O (apart from any associated with PHP functions) and no page
faults being registered - so I'm just having a hard time
understanding why the CPU is not being used.

We did boost the memory on the box which resulted in the speed of the
app increasing and the CPU usage dropping - I'm just trying to
understand what I can do next. Want to make it do something with all
this spare CPU that's lying around while I'm waiting!! ...
