I normally just make another SQL statement like this:

eval SQLCount = 'SELECT COUNT(*) '
'FROM file ' +
%trim(SQLWhere)

Perhaps you could use Elvis' Common Table Expression (CTE) suggestion or Michael's Global Temporary Table (GTT) suggestion. Then, select the count from the CTE or the GTT.
