I think you might be mistaken. I remember it being new on the /400, sometime within the last decade or so (may be a little longer). Can't remember when.

Have a look at the REFACCPTH keyword in DDS for a LF...

I started out on about Release 3 of the System 38 and it was sharing
access automatically going back that far. I suspect it was in there from
the beginning.
