I won't argue the technical details of the concept. I can only offer
the empirical results: a non-unique keyed physical file takes
approximately 15% the time that a unique keyed physical takes to insert
a row.


I thought this was attributed to the suppression of blocking when a unique
key constraint exists. With a unique key, it must check with each insertion
if there is a key violation. When not unique, then it can buffer blocks of
insertions.
