I think other most models of the WRT54G work with OpenWRT and/or dd-wrt.
The 'L' version was just an attempt to make it easier (and slightly
more expensive) for people who wanted to get in to the fun without doing
a lot of research about model numbers before buying.
So if you are interested in alternate firmwares, check out the projects'
hardware lists. They even have non-Linksys models on there.
