Scott,

To keep the CM gods happy, you're going to have to check out the original DDL and modify it.

Might check to see if Turnover can be set to use Alter Table/CHGPF when possible; I can do so with
Aldon.

Basically, you check out the original DDL, make your change and promote it. During the promotion,
Aldon will create a temporary version of the new table, that it (somehow) compares to the original.
Aldon will determine the differences, then if possible will issue an appropriate ALTER TABLE statement
to make the original look like the new one.

Actually, Aldon can do the same with DDS defined files by utilizing the CHGPF command.

If it is not possible to use ALTER TABLE/CHGPF, then Aldon goes back to the old method of just copying
the data from the original version to the new.

Subject: SQL DDL and CMS

Acronyms aplenty here...

Starting to use SQL DDL to define tables and such instead of DDS. When I
created the table, I speced out the 'Create Table' and used our CMS
(Change
Management System) Softlandings' TurnOver to create/promote the table into
production. This works great. I now need to add a column to the table. I
can check out the original DDL source, make change, and re-promote it. I
could also just open up Navigator and add the column. I could just do a
Alter Table in a SQL window. I am just not sure what the best method is
to
do this change and keep the change management gods happy.

How are people using CMS to handle the DDL? What are the best practices
for utilizing SQL DDL?
