It is CPF, OS/400 and i5/OS running above the MI layer that only uses 10 characters to name its objects created from one or more "primitive" MI objects.


One complication with extending the 10 char OS names to the 30 char MI names is that some objects are mapped differently. For example, In MI file members are named "FILE MEMBER". A 30 character file name would break this.
