You can test the ability of *AFPDS on a HP network printer before making a big purchase. Have usually needed a WSCST (workstation customization) for the device description when sending *afpds to hp - but that is easy. Stick to the HP & Lexmarks in the Knowledge Base docs for the printers that work best.
I have found there are things that IPDS will do the *AFPDs
will not (this may not be 100% accurate description but it was duplex printing of a tri-fold mailing piece with different format barcodes on various part, and because it was tri-fold, some barcodes rotated 180 degrees - afpds couldn't do it). I talked to some guy in printer division and he said IPDS was the only native way.
I personally like the Lexmark printers - but not the home and low end cr*P,
and then HP. Be prepared for maintenance costs like drum kits, and the high cost of toner cartridges. The printers are cheap compared to the on going costs.

Most good quality printers will handle that type of output (*AFP)
using HPT - Host Print Transform. Unless you get wild, you don't need
IPDS. Create your printer files using the AFPDS data stream, and HPT
(specified on the printer device description) will convert the AFPDS
to PCL which is used on the printer.

I am a little confused. In the past, to use overlays or special fonts in
printing, we always had to use IPDS compatible printers. Lexmark printers
have IBM PPDS compatibility built in, but they charge almost $600
additional for an IPDS/SCS card. I can't find an IPDS card for HP printers
with the company we buy from. Does anyone know if the IPDS card is
required for Lexmark/HP printers? Does HP allow IPDS printing? I haven't
had to buy printers in several years but am trying to find a decent
quality printer that will duplex and allow IPDS printing from the i5 that
doesn't cost $1700/ea. It doesn't have to be high capacity
500-1000pp/week. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am trying to move things from line printers to laser but if they have to
buy 8 new printers for $14000.00 + shipping, I think that is going to be
hard to get them to do even though the savings longterm on not having to
have pre-printed forms etc will outweigh the initial outlay in a couple of
years.
