Shutting down the system is the -easy- part.

The problems arise when you start back up again-- what application programs had to be ended *IMMED to bring down the system? You need to analyze the application and find out how to start things back up again, possibly restoring backups and re-running things. This is usually caused when a batch job has to be ended out of turn.

That's why our main systems are set to NOT re-start subsystems during an IPL, or re-start automatically after a power failure. We prefer to inspect things and bring things back on line only once we're sure our data is intact.
