I have seen a number of postings in the archives about getting a
replacement battery for a 2740 from Batteries Plus.
They don't have a store in my immediate area.
It appears IBM original part number 44H8429 that appears in the problem
record has been superseded by 44L0305.
I found that battery is available through Interstate Batteries.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience using this replacment.
Also, can someone provide the procedure to "force a battery dead"
condition? I'm guessing it is done through SST
Hardware Manager, but I haven't been able to find the procedure.
Thanks, Scott
