It never ocured to me to specify a unique lable on the SAV command.
I have been just accepting the IBM default for so long that I forgot that I could use my own.

FWiW: When specifying a unique label for each request, rather than
defaulting to LABEL(*LIB), then the sequence number can be searched;
i.e. SEQNBR(*SEARCH). The message which records the completion of the
following request will identify the sequence number of the specified
label.
CHKTAP TheDev VOL(*MOUNTED) SEQNBR(*SEARCH)
LABEL(TheLabel) ENDOPT(*LEAVE)
