If you read through the posts at the end of the article one of them
mentions that the missing messages usually show up again after a few
days. Not optimal, but it sounds like the loss isn't permanent.

I did, but I also got the impression that not all people got theirs
returned, and some said things like "a few days, or even months". Not sure
I like the sound of that.
