I understand your concern about whether or not it's really just eating up
that space. I had this concern at first, even with date fields, because
even DSPPFM shows the formatted field. Apparently IBM felt that we could
handle packed data appearing as packed in DSPPFM because, heck, packed has
been around since the first coming of Christ. But dates, and stuff not
appearing as lined up on varchar, would drive us nuts. (And also make it
harder for ancient languages like RPG400 vs RPGLE to process these
fields.)
I tried DMPOBJ and couldn't find the simple text data in the file.
