FMTDTA is rarely used these days in CLP applications. It does work, but it is really a
left over program from the S/36 days. Main frame guys would also us fmtdta to replicate
apps that were used in DOS/VS or even very old MVS batch applications.

Strangely enough, fmtdta might actually be faster than it's more modern cousins like
SQL but the developers didn't give fmtdta much in the way of flexibility so passing
selection parms and such are just not there.

A older but much wider used program is Opnqryf which can be used to sort.

What are you trying to do ?

Are you migrating an application or developing a new one ?

The questions you are asking about are auto-magic features of the OS that you
don't have to fool with.

List,

Is there a way to configure the system SORT (FMTDTA?) concerning defaults, etc?

For example, on the mainframe, I have our SORT configured such that every sort, whether it be in-stream or from a COBOL program, gets a 4MB dataspace (memory area) for its primary work area. Only after that space is exhausted does it begin to use disk for sort-work. I would like to see if there are options like that supported in FMTDTA. I've been searching the archives and the iSeries Information Center but can't find where default settings for SORT can be configured. Surely there is a way to do this isn't there? TIA
