Use DDL and CLOBs instead?
No native I/O access then, but embedded SQL should work fine.

Subject: DDS Record Length Error
I am laying out a new set of files for a new application. When I went to
compile one of the files, I get this error: "The combined length of all the
fields in the record cannot be greater than 32766 bytes." We have several
fields that will have some long descriptions in them so we want to set those
text fields at 32740 VARLEN. I didn't know about this max length before. Is
there a way to work around it?
