Ten years ago, I would have easily recommended a Tech Conference over COMMON for a 1st-timer. The atmosphere and scheduling was far less intimidating. There are other differences already noted, but the 1st-timer could have been almost overwhelmed by COMMON a while back.

After a Tech Conference at least once, COMMON would then begin to pull ahead due to the sheer volume and range of sessions.

But, I haven't been to a Tech Conference for a long time and COMMON is a little less intimidating (or I've been to too many to notice any more over the years). Maybe the difference isn't so great nowadays.
