Jim,
We are going to a different solution to run our business. We are going to phase out all of our COBOL apps :(. We have purchased a product called LANSA. We have hired an outside contractor to help us with this transition and he keeps jawin' about how much easier it would be if our box had SQL. How/why he needs it is unbeknownst to me (at this point).

Subject: Re: SQL Finding & Using
Len,
We are still a COBOL shop, and write/maintain programs in COBOL, as well as
delving into SQL where it seems to be a better solution. I'm not convinced
that we can get rid of COBOL entirely, as it does things like record level
access that seem to me more efficient for a 1 record at a time change in a
keyed file. I know that SQL is good, but only as it manages sets of data.
Our user programs deal with individual records for display and update when
dealing with clients.I would be interested in knowing how you are or plan to
use SQL.
Good luck with the learning!

All,
Thank you for all of your responses. From what I'm reading we
need to purchase the development kit. As for what/why we are looking to
SQL, well we used to be a COBOL shop with all in-house home grown apps. We
are in the process of switching to LANSA and have an outside contractor
helping us. He says he/we can be much more productive with SQL. For as
long as I have been here 10+ yrs, we have always used a third party software
to get/change/manipulate our data.
Thanks again for everyone's help
