If I were that boss I would just 'splain' "ain't going to happen".  I 
understand your fear, but I will say that I have never installed any of 
the MS Office applications and I have never received an e-mail I can't 
open and read.  Never.

I can see a case for browser plug-ins.  But again, I am just curious.  I 
can understand a boss not really caring if employees don't have the 
latest web plug-ins.
